Building Information Modeling and Simulations

BIM2SIM – INTEGRATING PEDESTRIAN SIMULATION IN CONSTRUCTION PROCESSES

Construction projects are complex. With increasing demands in safety, comfort, ergonomics and aesthetics, practitioners are turning to digital technologies to manage the details. Crowd simulation is one such digital tool. Well known in the field of fire safety, crowd simulation evaluates the functionality and performance of a building in advance, reducing risk and highlighting design weaknesses. In combination with Building Information Modeling, crowd simulation seamlessly integrates into construction planning.

The advantage: mistakes in the planning phase can be detected early and high follow-up costs can be avoided. This is also confirmed in the figures: with simulation costs of 0.02% of the project costs, the high follow-up costs of an average of 10% can be reduced.

We are actively involved in creating and expanding standards so that simulations can be smoothly integrated into intelligent building models.

To this end, we are a member of the buildingSmart International working group, which is expanding the IFC standard to include properties that are relevant for people flow simulations. This international working group was formed in 2018 and submitted a proposal at the end of 2023 on how IFC can be expanded.

The first step was to create three use cases, which were used to identify the missing properties and develop a proposal on how this missing information can be included in the standard.

This collaboration is embedded in the BEYOND research project, within which the automatic integration of simulations in building models was the prerequisite.
