Evacuation simulation at the university campus

For the company Börgel GmbH & Co. KG a deviation of the German occupational safety guideline ASR was checked and compensated with an evacuation simulation.

Background

In many workplaces it happens that the technical rules for workplaces (ASR) are not adhered to. Often, this concerns minimum widths of escape routes. However, this is not only a problem in existing buildings, but also in new buildings due to the different requirements of building law and workplace law. The project at hand involved a new building complex to be constructed on a university campus.

Objective of the simulation

In the course of planning, it became apparent that the clear width in the stairwell deviated slightly from the minimum width required by ASR A2.3. In order to show that this width is nevertheless sufficient for the planned number of occupants, accu:rate was commissioned with a simulation.

Our approach

A comparative simulation was created. The first simulation was executed with the planned escape route widths and the actual number of occupants; the second simulation was created with the required minimum widths of the ASR and the maximum number of occupants that are permitted by the guideline. This allowed the level of safety to be compared.

Results

Despite the fact that the minimum width of the escape routes was not reached, it was possible to prove that the safety level was sufficient. The simulation was able to proof that the evacuation times with the actual number of occupants were significantly lower than the evacuation times of the comparison scenario.
