Evacuation simulation of the Munich Oktoberfest

Description
Client: Munich Security Services GmbH
Task: Evacuation simulation
Result: Bottlenecks were identified and evacuation optimized.

Background

The Munich Oktoberfest is the largest and most famous folk festival in the world - with specially brewed festival beer, unusual rides and immense visitor numbers of over 6 million people per year. During the two weeks of the so-called "Wiesn", hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world come to the Bavarian capital alongside local guests. The folk festival was initiated in honor of the wedding of Ludwig von Bayern and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, which was celebrated with a large horse race in 1810.
"With the help of the simulations, we were able to significantly optimize our evacuation concept and gained valuable insights." (Andre Listing, Project and Event Manager Oktoberfest + Oide Wiesn, City of Munich)

Objective of the simulation

Modern security management is also essential for such a large modern event. For this reason, the organizer drew up a security concept and commissioned Munich Security Services GmbH to create an evacuation concept. In order to check the feasibility of this evacuation concept, accu:rate carried out an evacuation simulation.

Our approach

  •  The entire orderly evacuation of the festival grounds
  • The evacuation of individual festival tents

Results

The analysis provided insightful findings about the basic evacuation times and bottlenecks on the site. The organizer was able to use this knowledge of critical points to optimize the security and evacuation concept as well as to prepare his security personnel on site in the best possible way and to sensitize them to potential critical points.
