Evacuation simulation of the Allianz Arena

Client: Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH
Task: Evacuation simulation
Result: Compliance with the protection goals proven

The Allianz Arena opened its doors for the first time in 2005. Due to the high demand from fans and the bid to host the European Championships in 2020, the stadium has been continuously developed and expanded. Today, it is the second largest soccer stadium in Germany with a capacity of 75,000 visitors over seven levels. One of the stadium's special features is the unique esplanade, which is 153 meters wide and 600 meters long and forms both the entrance to the stadium and the roof of the multi-storey parking lots below. A number of changes and renovations were carried out in 2018 in particular. In order to ensure the safe operation of the stadium from a fire protection perspective, Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH has been working with hhpberlin, one of the most innovative fire protection agencies in Germany, since the Allianz Arena was built.

Objective of the simulation

hhpberlin was also commissioned to review the evacuation concept. The focus of the analysis was on the redesign of the esplanade. This connects the parking garage and the Fröttmaning subway station with the Allianz Arena. In order to check whether the protection targets could still be met, the operator commissioned an evacuation simulation. hhpberlin created this using our crowd:it software and brought accu:rate on board as a consultant to support the project.

Our approach

  •  Checking the capacity of the Esplanade
  • Evacuation simulation of the stadium at full occupancy
  • Analysis of the total evacuation time, consideration of the bottlenecks and the maximum individual queuing time

The simulation was able to confirm that the protection targets for the evacuation of the stadium were sufficiently met. With the evacuation simulation, hhpberlin was able to test the reconstruction measures with regard to the flow of people in a complete building evacuation. Based on the analysis of the results, hhpberlin was able to derive organizational improvements, such as the local widening of pathways. Thanks to the new evacuation analysis, Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH did not have to carry out extensive conversion work, but was able to concentrate on individual areas.
