Background

During the coronavirus crisis, far-reaching decisions must be made to ensure the safety of citizens. Freedom of movement has been severely restricted and the economy is under severe strain. However, due to the novel nature of the situation, the information base for these decisions is still being developed. CovidSim aims to support these decisions and increase public acceptance of the measures.

The research project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the program "Civil Security - Corona Pandemic".

Project goal

Especially in system-relevant infrastructures such as railway stations, measures must be tested locally and specifically to prevent the spread of infection or even superspreader events. CovidSim aims to provide methods and techniques to simulate the spread of pandemics at the microscopic level. This will allow us to understand the processes of infection spread, derive reliable measures and communicate them clearly.

Implementation

Using the example of a subway station as a system-relevant infrastructure, the infection occurrence will be analyzed. Based on a study and literature research on the influencing factors of infection spreading, the simulation-relevant ones can be identified. This research will be extended with case studies on the challenges and desires of selected infrastructure operators. These findings will then be implemented in the simulator VADERE of the Munich University of Applied Sciences as well as in crowd:it of accu:rate. This allows different measures to be tested to determine whether they actually have the desired effect of reducing the spread of infection. This forms a comprehensible basis for political decisions, which can also be understood by laypersons thanks to the visual representation. The final step in the project is how the tested measures can then best be communicated so that they meet with understanding and acceptance.
