Ventilation analysis Rosenheim ice hockey stadium

Facts
Client: City of Rosenheim, Central Building Management
Task: Evacuation simulation
Result: Capacities determined

Background

accu:rate created an evacuation simulation for the Rosenheim ice hockey stadium (emilo Stadium) on behalf of the city of Rosenheim. Due to their age, the external staircases of the municipal ice stadium, which was built in 1961, need to be renovated. The removal of these escape routes will reduce the available escape route widths, meaning that the number of visitors will also have to be significantly reduced in accordance with VStättV (German regulations on the safety of public buildings). In order to check whether and to what extent the removal of these escape routes will affect evacuation times and how many visitors can be admitted in future, accu:rate carried out an evacuation analysis.
“Finally, we know how many people can be evacuated in what time frame and how large the additional steel staircase must be designed as an escape route.” Michael Hartmann, Head of the Building Maintenance and Operations Department of the City of Rosenheim

Objective of the simulation

Our Approach

  • How long will it take to evacuate the stadium with the planned number of visitors?
  • Will there be traffic jams, and if so, where?
  • How long will the traffic jams last?

Results

It turned out that, with the legally mandated reduction in visitor numbers, the escape routes on the main entrance side were far from being fully utilized. This was mainly due to the fact that the flow of people had already been greatly reduced in the seating areas of the stadium. More people do not always have to mean a longer evacuation time. Therefore, a simulation was carried out with a higher number of visitors than specified by the VStättV. The higher capacity of the main escape route meant that a higher occupancy rate could be achieved in the stadium without increasing the overall evacuation time. This is a good example of how a higher occupancy rate in a building does not necessarily have an impact on evacuation times.
