Visitor flow analysis at Munich Airport

Description
Client: Munich Airport
Task: Evacuation simulation
Result: The evacuation concept was reviewed and optimized.

Background
Munich Airport was voted Europe's best airport for the 10th time at this year's World Airport Awards. Terminal 2 was even named the best terminal in the world. More than 14 million travelers cast their votes at the Skytrax Institute in London, choosing Munich for its high level of comfort and travel experience. Munich Airport achieved fourth place worldwide – a very pleasing result, especially for us Munich residents who travel through this airport so often.
Of course, this success did not come about by itself. Munich Airport is constantly striving to offer its passengers comfort, safety, and innovative solutions. This includes the pleasant design and optimization of the walkways on Level 03 of Terminal 2.
Objective of the simulation
A visitor flow analysis will be conducted to examine how people would move in the event of an evacuation.
Our approach
Two different scenarios:
- Option 1: Evacuation along the escape routes defined in the fire protection concept
- Option 2: Evacuation via the routes used by people to enter the building, which lead directly to the outside
Results
- Option 1: Significant congestion in front of the interior exits. This is due to the fact that the walking distances are quite short and there is a higher density of people, especially in the interior of the terminal.
- Option 2: Longer walking distances, but precisely because of this, there is no congestion and the crowds are spread out. The second option was therefore better for visitor comfort.

Variant 2: Paths taken by visitors: Each red line represents a path.
