ACSAI

The ACSAI (Autonomous Crowd Simulation with Artificial Intelligence) project aims to integrate new technologies in the field of artificial intelligence into crowd simulation. crowd:it, our crowd simulation software, will be further developed by ACSAI to enable faster and more flexible responses to the complex requirements involved in planning large buildings and events. In this way, ACSAI aims to improve safety and efficiency in the planning of public spaces, venues and transport infrastructure.

The project is funded by the Horizon Europe Programm Women TechEU of the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA).

Background

Traditional methods of construction and event planning are based on analogue processes that are time-consuming and error-prone. Digital methods, such as crowd simulation, offer solutions, but challenges remain: long computing times and limited application flexibility. At ACSAI, we have been investigating and testing the applicability of various AI methods to speed up simulation time and produce faster results.

Implementation

As part of the ACSAI project, we are exploring various AI approaches, including:

  • Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN): Originally designed as the core of the project, the model has been tested from the BEYOND project to predict simulation results and therefore get the results faster and more efficiently.

  • Reinforcement Learning (RL): This model enables agents in the simulation to dynamically adapt to their environment and make more realistic decisions. RL lays the foundation for future-proof models that can simulate realistic and intelligent human movement.

  • Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD): DMD opens up opportunities to significantly reduce the computing power required for simulation. This is a first step towards near-real-time simulations, which are particularly valuable in the planning of major events.
