DISTANSIM
DISTANSIM aims to contribute to increasing safety in public spaces. Findings from current studies are being analyzed to determine how social distancing can be modeled in crowd flow simulations and incorporated into the simulator as a parameter. This will enable testing at train stations, for example, to determine how measures for implementing social distancing rules can be further improved. The ongoing DISTANSIM project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDV) with a total of 23,742 euros by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) gefördert.
Background
The coronavirus crisis is having an impact on public life unlike anything we have seen in recent decades. DISTANSIM therefore wants to develop a tool that can be used to test and improve the implementation of social distancing between people. Specifically, the aim is to investigate how social distancing can be incorporated into a simulation model as an adjustable parameter.
Project goal
By means of a people flow simulation, planners and operators should be able to test various scenarios to find out how the layout of infrastructure buildings can be further improved in the current situation. These findings can then be incorporated as an important component in hygiene concepts, thus supporting public institutions in returning to normal operation.
Fact sheet
Funding amount: €23,741.80 Funding period: May 2020 – June 2020 Project consortium:
- accu:rate GmbH
- Chair of Computer-Aided Modeling and Simulation, TUM

Implementation
First, DISTANSIM will develop the basis for modeling by researching current scientific literature and studies. The findings will be transferred to the simulation model and demonstrated in the form of a showcase. This will be presented to various interest groups and thus tested for practical suitability.
